Dylan - Strong sight reading this week. Hands in parallel motion. Still working on Fascination in Performance book & the second movement of the Sonatina. Fascination just needs another week of practicing - getting the hands together at a consistent pace. 3/4 time signature demands a strong 1st beat. Will re-evaluate if still struggling with hands together, or move on. Sonatina is coming along..."A" section worked on the trill, triplet vs. duple feel, and some tricky rhythms that showed up. Working on "B" section this next week. Theory HW assigned - Creating chordal Harmony with L.H.
Sabrina - Working on finishing up the 2A books - Reviewed pieces from last week. Whirling leaves was quite beautiful. Worked a good portion of the lesson on major/minor keys and the minor key formula this week. Reviewed homework and solidified some trouble parts - she had no problem after discussion today about the different keys. Theory HW assigned relating to major/minor keys. Assigned new piece Allegro in F major, K.1c from Nannerl's Music Book by Mozart and talked about the history behind the notebook/Mozart. Worked on the R.H., will work on L.H. and combining at next lesson.
Woo! Summer of Rock!
New Piece: Surfin' USA - Beach Boys - transition from the Beatles (although they seem to still want more Beatles ;)
-Learned opening melody line picking ukulele.
-Combo of strumming and drumming (patting on Uke)
-Worked on starting to sing more with strums - gave them key words to sing while strumming if they couldn't sing the whole line.
Picking Uke Piece: America the Beautiful
Worked through the piece strumming chords and singing first - then we broke off into two separate groups of picking the melody line and strumming the chords. Ended really well by playing through twice (by their request!). They are really starting to create a wonderful sound together. I will definitely look for more pieces that they can each play a different role. (Strumming and/or picking melody line).
New ukes definitely add to morale!! Thank you!!
Getting back into the swing of things!
Dylan - Working on Fascination in Performance book & moved on to the second movement of the Sonatina. Focused on musical phrasing of the melody and how dynamics shape the phrase. Looking for expressive playing with Fascination next lesson. Reviewed a little on the information about Clementi. Theory HW assigned.
Sabrina - Working on finishing up the 2A books - She is flying through the series at a very rapid pace. We are completing at least one new piece in the lessons we have had. Started with sight reading some rhythms. No problems with identifying quarter note/rest rhythms, but seemed to have a liiiittle trouble when a lot of rests were filling the measures. Introduced key of A major and reviewed the formula for creating a major scale. Pieces & theory HW assigned.
*NEXT WEEK REMINDER: Mozart Allegro in F major, K.1c from Nannerl's Music Book
Sabrina - Still prepping for recital (Snake Charmer & Song of the Vagabond) Fixed R.H. rhythms and worked on expressiveness with each little phrase. Song of the Vagabond is pretty much ready. She is working on playing without the music this week. Her pedaling has come along significantly with this piece!
-Didn't quite finish all of her theory HW, but we finished up in lesson and ended with some ear training of recognizing rhythms. She is doing very well with recognizing rhythms!
Dylan - Also still prepping for recital (Dill Pickle Rag & Sonatina) Dill Pickle Rag is ready - he just needs to keep practicing to feel comfortable. Sonatina is almost there - memorization is good, I'm just looking for a little more expressiveness in his playing. We drilled the B section and dynamics today and hopefully that will carry through in his practicing this week. We are almost finished with his first sight reading book and he is doing very well. Still working on recognizing dynamics along with notes. *Need to work on phrasing*
Also introduced recording audio through garageband today -
Audio Interface - Condenser Mic - XLR cable -
Recorded 12 bar C blues accompaniment (Dylan)
Over dubbed Solo (Sabrina) We learned the C blues scale.
⌘T - Cut section of selected audio where playhead is positioned
(option)⌥+drag - copy section of audio
Enter - return playhead to beginning
Spacebar - Play/Stop
R - record
Dylan - Prepped for recital and will play Dill Pickle Rag & Clementi's Sonatina in C major, op. 36 no. 1
Didn't do theory hw - A minor i iv & V7 chords - recognized and played the chords in the next activity and made up for it. Identified all the chords and had to draw in the chords for HW.
Sabrina - Prepped on recital and the pieces she will play Béla Bartók Song of the Vagabond (Canción del Vagabundo) & Snake Charmer. Learned formula for D major 5 finger chord- Touch on circle of 5ths next week to solidify knowledge of the first 3 sharp keys. She did really well on the theory homework identifying C, G, and D chords.
